You Asked for It
December 2004
Hello Sharon,
Our program is interested in purchasing flat screen monitors for management and I have been asked to give some input regarding the size, make etc. Could you please let me know what you believe is best? Is it a good decision to purchase 21" monitors for our staff if they are LCD?
If you could get back to me that would be great Sharon, I appreciate any information that you are able to assist me with.
Thank you.
Andrea
Response:
The problem with the very large monitors (greater than 19") is that the large surface area of the screen either requires the user to continuously adjust their head position to view the contents from side to side, or the monitor needs to be placed quite far back on the desk. Most people need only use a 17" LCD monitor because the viewable area is actually larger than that of a 17" CRT monitor. But unless the monitor can be moved back on the desk (and the text size increased), I don't recommend larger than 19".
One of the features that I recommend considering in your purchase is height adjustability. At this time I am only aware of Dell and HP making height adjustable monitors - i.e. the base adjusts. This will save you from having to place it on space consuming blocks.
