Feedback
March 2004

Hello,

I work for Alberta Human Resources and Employment in an Administrative Support Role. I have been suffering with some type of repetitive strain injury for the past 7 months. I am looking for all the information I can, as my condition has affected my work and has stopped me from doing almost all recreational activities. I received your January 2004 Working Well Information and especially enjoyed your article on Repetitive Strain.

Thank you.
LH

Response:

Hi LH,

I am glad the information in Working Well was helpful. The most important thing about RSI's is early recognition. The sooner you address the work station concerns (and particularly when combined with treatment), the sooner you will be able to get back to working - and living - comfortably.

Your doctor/physiotherapist/chiropractor/massage therapist will be able to help you determine if the injury is work related. If that is the case, you will need to file a WCB claim. This is important, because if the injury continues to worsen, you will need documentation to support your claim. You will need to inform your supervisor of your concerns. He/She can contact the Departmental Health and Safety representative to arrange an ergonomic assessment through the Alberta Corporate Service Centre or can hire a consultant directly. A list of Consultants is available through the Association of Canadian Ergonomists: www.ace.ergonomist.ca. The sooner the factors that cause or aggravate the injury are removed, the sooner you will start to feel better and get back to doing the things you love to do.
